Controls Support Engineer – Baggage Handling Systems

About the role

The Controls Support Engineer is the mid‑to‑high level technical expert responsible for the PLC and low‑level control infrastructure of a Baggage Handling System (BHS). The role ensures reliable operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and optimisation of PLC‑controlled equipment and associated control systems.

Key responsibilities

• Provide first‑line and advanced technical support for BHS low‑level controls, PLCs, remote I/O, industrial networks, drives, scanners and sensors.
• Diagnose, analyse and restore PLC/control incidents that impact BHS operations.
• Support preventive, corrective, breakdown and emergency maintenance activities related to BHS controls.
• Coordinate incidents with senior engineers, maintenance managers, OEM specialists and global service desks.
• Monitor system health, communication status, alarms and recurring faults.
• Assist in contingency procedures, shutdown/start‑up activities and crisis recovery exercises.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical, Electronics, Automation, Mechatronics or related field.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in PLC/automation systems, with at least 5 years in baggage handling systems.
• Strong practical knowledge of PLC programming, diagnostics and troubleshooting.
• Ability to read electrical drawings, control schematics, network diagrams and functional descriptions.
• Good English verbal and written communication skills and ability to work independently in multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Siemens S7 / TIA Portal programming.
• Low‑Level Controls, control panels and remote I/O systems.
• Industrial communication networks: PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP.
• Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), motor control, encoders, sensors, scanners and photo‑electric devices.
• Safety‑related equipment and SCADA/HMI interfaces.
• Basic understanding of server/client architecture, networking, virtualization and related IT infrastructure.
