Tug Master (Captain) – Maritime Vessel Operations

About the role

The Tug Master (Captain) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of SVITZER’s tug vessels, overseeing crew, compliance and vessel readiness.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain overall safety and security of crew, vessel and environment, exercising overriding authority when needed.
• Review and report on the safety management system, ensuring statutory certifications remain valid.
• Motivate and ensure crew compliance with the safety management system and related procedures.
• Act as tug manager: coordinate crew attendance, provision of stores, and readiness for operations.
• Ensure compliance with SVITZER HSE, environmental, security and cyber‑security procedures and relevant regulations.
• Manage crew discipline, maintenance supervision, operational reporting and training.
• Lead safety training, visitor induction and continuous operational improvement initiatives.
• Oversee resource availability for cargo, ballast and other onboard activities.

Required profile

• Master’s licence for vessels under 500 GT (NCV).
• Basic Safety Training (STCW A‑VI/1).
• Proficiency in Medical Care On‑Board Ship (STCW A‑VI/4‑2).
• Proficiency in Survival techniques (STCW).
• Familiarity with safety management systems, OH&S, environmental and security regulations.

• STCW Survival proficiency.
