Tug Master (Captain) – Towage Operations

About the role

The Tug Master (Captain) leads the safe and efficient operation of SVITZER’s tug vessels. Reporting to shore‑based management, the Master holds ultimate authority for crew safety, vessel security and environmental protection while overseeing all aspects of tug operations.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and review the vessel’s Safety Management System, reporting deficiencies to shore.
• Ensure all statutory certifications remain valid and up‑to‑date.
• Motivate and train crew to comply with safety procedures and company policies.
• Act as tug manager: coordinate crew attendance, provision of stores, and readiness for operations.
• Comply with SVITZER HSE, security and cyber‑security procedures and relevant maritime regulations.
• Manage crew discipline, including escalation and, when necessary, discharge of non‑compliant personnel.
• Oversee routine tug maintenance and prepare operational reports.
• Conduct safety and induction training for crew, visitors and authorized personnel.
• Participate in operational improvement initiatives and liaise with management on procedural enhancements.

Required profile

• II/3 – Master of a vessel under 500 GT, NCV certified.
• Basic Safety Training (STCW A‑VI/1).
• Proficiency in Medical Care On‑Board Ship (STCW A‑VI/4‑2).
• Proficiency in Survival techniques (STCW).
• Extensive experience in tug or towage operations.
