Chief Engineer (Marine)

About the role

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall maintenance and operation of the tug’s marine plant and equipment, ensuring compliance with schedules, budgets and safety standards. Reporting directly to the Master, the role combines technical oversight, crew supervision and regulatory compliance on board.

Key responsibilities

• Execute tug maintenance according to the planned schedule and budget.
• Maintain and repair marine plant, engine, and auxiliary equipment.
• Supervise engineering personnel and sign off completed work.
• Prepare maintenance and operational reports as required.
• Participate in safety training and train other crew members.
• Monitor occupational health and safety standards and environmental regulations.
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of all machinery, safety and environmental protection equipment.
• Maintain accurate Engine Logbook and Oil Record Book.
• Manage bunker and internal oil transfers in line with company procedures.
• Perform operational duties such as mooring, unmooring and tow‑line handling.
• Conduct induction training for visitors when the Master or Deck Officer is unavailable.

Required profile

• III/3 – Chief Engineer certification.
• Basic Safety Training (STCW A‑VI/1).
• Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A‑VI/3).
• Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat (STCW A‑VI/2).
• Medical First Aid proficiency (STCW A‑VI/4‑1).
• Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties (STCW A‑VI/6).
• Valid Seafarer Medical certificate.
